Event Corner

The Killers is a rock and roll band that formed in 2002 in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The Killers’ music spans the genres of alternative rock, indie rock, post-punk rock revival and rock and roll.  The members of the Killers are:  Brandon Flowers who performs vocals and plays the synthesizer, Dave Keuning who plays the guitar, Mark Stoermer who plays bass and Ronnie Vannucci Jr. who play drums and performs vocals.  The Killers’ music is influenced by the music of the 1980’s in the United States and also contains influences of British sounds.

Background

The four members of the Killers all met in Las Vegas while holding an array of jobs. Flowers was a bellhop at the Gold Coast Hotel, Keuning worked at a Banana Republic store, Stoermer worked as a medical courier and studied philosophy and Vannucci was a student who worked as a photographer and a pedicab driver.  Eventually, the members united when Flowers responded to an ad posted by Keuning.  The two began rehearsing together with a bassist and a drummer.  The bassist and drummer soon moved on, and Stoermer and Vannucci joined the band.  The band performed its first show at a Las Vegas club called the Junkyard.

The Killers grew in popularity with local agents and eventually the owner of an indie label in the United Kingdom.  In 2004, the Killers released Hot Fuss in the United Kingdom and the United States in 2004.  Japanese and French versions of the album were also released in 2004.

The Killers have appeared on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and have made an appearance on the television hit, “The O.C.”  They have also appeared in “Saturday Night Live,” “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and “The Tonight Show.”

In 2005, the Killers performed at the Glastonbury Festival, the T in the Park festival (where Flowers also performed with the band, New Order) and the Live 8 concert.  They also joined U2 on the European leg of U2’s Vertigo tour.

Music / Albums

The Killers have two studio albums:  Hot Fuss (2004) and Sam’s Town (2006).  Hot Fuss contains the popular singles “Mr. Brightside” and “All These Things That I’ve Done.”  “All These Things I’ve Done” is included on the soundtrack for the movie Southland Tales and was used in the movie The Matador.  Sam’s Town includes the single “When You Were Young” which quickly climbed the US and UK charts.

Awards

The Killers have been nominated for a number of Grammy Awards, an American Music Award, a Billboard Music Award and MTV Video Music Awards.  In 2005, the Killers won an MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist.
