Jack Johnson is an American singer and songwriter, filmmaker, surfer and record label owner.  Jack Johnson is best known for his alternative music in which he plays the guitar and the ukulele.  Playing with Jack Johnson are Adam Topol on the drums and Merlo on bass.

Background

Jack Johnson was born on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii on May 18, 1975.  Johnson was an avid skateboarder and surfer who learned these skills from his father’s best friend who also taught him to play the guitar at age 14.  Johnson attended college at the University of California, Santa Barbara where he played rhythm guitar with a band named “Soil.” After graduating, Johnson co-directed and filmed the surfing movie “Thicker Than Water.”  Johnson pursued a career in professional surfer until he suffered an accident causing him to break bones and lose his front teeth.

Jack Johnson got one of his big musical breaks with the assistance of musician Ben Harper.  In 2001, Johnson released his debut album, Brushfire Fairytales.  Johnson then toured for almost 2 years before the release of his second album, On and On.  Both of these albums were met with success.  Jack Johnson’s third studio album, In Between Dreams, spent over a year at the top of the charts.  He recently released the album Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the Film Curious George that appeals to children and adults alike.

Jack Johnson’s music videos have an original theme.  The video for “Sitting, Waiting, Wishing” shows everything happening in reverse, including lyrics that Johnson mouthed in reverse.  The video for his song “Taylor” includes an appearance from actor Ben Stiller.

Over the years, Jack Johnson has helped create and/or has appeared in number of films through Moonshine Conspiracy Films.  These productions include the surfing movies “Thicker Than Water,” “September Sessions” and “Shelter” as well as other movies such as “The Seedling,” “Broken Down Melody” and “Sprout”.

Jack Johnson owns the Brushfire Records label.  He also co-founded the Kokua Hawaii Foundation to support environmental education in Hawaii.  The Kokua Hawaii Foundation has an annual festival called the Kokua Festival which unites environmental organizations, environmentally friendly businesses, community leaders, artists and teachers to promote the cause.
