Knicks Corner

The New York Knickerbockers (the “Knicks”) are a professional basketball team in the National Basketball Association (the NBA).  The New York Knicks play in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference with four other teams: the Boston Celtics, the New Jersey Nets, the Toronto Raptors and the Philadelphia 76ers.  Knicks tickets will surely be hard to come by during the 2014-2015 NBA schedule.

New York Knicks 2014-2015 Outlook

Personal transformations in the preseason have a way of reversing themselves as the year progresses, but for now, it seems Jackson has performed magic.

Getting Smith to buy into the equal-opportunity tenets of the triangle offense is huge, and everything after that—figuring out how to coax defense out of a frontcourt rotation involving Andrea Bargnani and Amar’e Stoudemire, convincing James Dolan to keep kazoos out of the locker room—should be cake.

The Knicks aren’t so far removed from a 54-win season in 2012-13. Jackson’s influence alone should help them get closer to that total than the 37 wins they amassed last season.

Madison Square Garden

The New York Knicks play their home games inside the hallowed walls of Madison Square Garden.  Madison Square Garden is located right in the heart of midtown Manhattan, on Seventh Avenue between 31st and 33rd Streets.  In addition to hosting all New York Knicks NBA basketball games, Madison Square Garden also hosts all of the professional hockey games for the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League, all of the professional basketball games for the New York Liberty of the Women’s National Basketball Association and all of the professional lacrosse games for the New York Titans of the National Lacrosse League. Madison Square Garden holds a capacity of 19,763 devoted die-hard New York Knicks fans.  Madison Square Garden is considered “The World’s Most Famous Arena”.  It has played host to numerous memorable and historic NBA basketball games, NHL hockey games, concerts and boxing events, as well as exciting theatre events and concerts in the WaMu Theater at Madison Square Garden.  It has also hosted the Big East Men’s College Basketball Tournament since 1983.

History

The New York Knicks and the Boston Celtics are the only 2 original members of the NBA that still play in their original cities.  The New York Knicks played for the NBA title 3 times during the 1950’s.  In the early 1970’s, the Knicks won 2 NBA Championships.  Willis Reed, Walt Frazier, Earl Monroe, Bill Bradley and Dave DeBusschere were the key cogs to the glory year teams of the 1970’s.  Twenty years later, the Knicks turned to a young center from Georgetown University to revitalize the team.  Patrick Ewing dominated the middle of floor during the 1990’s, leading the team to the NBA Finals twice in 1994 and 1999.  During that stretch, Ewing and the Knicks battled Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls almost every year for the Eastern Conference title.  This constant competition between the Knicks and Bulls turned the rivalry into one of the most intense rivalries in the NBA.  Ewing and the Knicks also developed exciting battles with David Robinson of the San Antonio Spurs; Hakeem Olajuwon of the Houston Rockets; Charles Barkley of the Phoenix Suns; Karl Malone of the Utah Jazz and Shaquille O’Neal of the Miami Heat.  The New York Knicks retired Walt Frazier’s #10 on December 15, 1979; Dick Barnett’s #12 on March 10, 1990; Earl Monroe’s #15 on March 1, 1986; Dick McGuire’s #15 on March 14, 1992; Willis Reed’s #19 on October 21, 1976; Dave Debusschere’s #22 on March 24, 1981; Bill Bradley’s #24 on February 18, 1984; Patrick Ewing’s #33 on February 28, 2003; and Coach Red Holzman’s #613 on March 10, 1990.
