Panthers Corner

The Florida Panthers are a professional hockey team in the National Hockey League (the NHL). The Florida Panthers play in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference with four other teams: the Carolina Panthers, the Washington Capitals, the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Atlanta Thrashers.  Panthers tickets will be a hot item during the 2014-2015 NHL hockey schedule.

Florida Panthers 2014-2015 Outlook

The Panthers were awful last year; only the Sabres had fewer goals scored or a worse differential, and only the Oilers gave up more goals. Florida will get a full season from Roberto Luongo, which should address the goals-against problem, and 19-year-old Aleksander Barkov has the raw talent to help on the offensive side. And the free agents should help — even Bolland, who’s a useful player even if his contract is ridiculous.

So they’ll be better this year; it would be hard not to be. But that may not be saying much, because they’re miles away from contending.

History

The Florida Panthers franchise was originally founded in 1974 and was originally owned by H. Wayne Huizenga, the Blockbuster video mogul. Currently Florida businessman Alan Cohen and former NFL quarterback Bernie Kosar are the principal owners of the Florida Panthers franchise.  The Florida Panthers did not record a winning record, nor qualify for NHL post-season play during the first 2 seasons in the NHL.  During the 1995-1996 NHL season, however, the Florida Panthers won 41 games en route to a 92-point season.  In one of the more memorable runs in NHL playoff history, the Florida Panthers defeated the Boston Bruins in 5 games, the Philadelphia Flyers in 6 games and the Pittsburgh Penguins in 7 games to advance to the franchise’s first and only Stanley Cup Series.  In a disappointing finals, the Colorado Avalanche swept the Florida Panthers in 4 games, denying the Florida Panthers their first opportunity to bring the Stanley Cup to the State of Florida.  The Florida Panthers have not won another NHL playoffs series since that Stanley Cup Finals appearance, advancing to the NHL playoffs only twice in 1997 and 2000.

The Florida Panthers have not retired any players’ numbers.  Wayne Gretzky’s #99 was retired league-wide by the NHL on February 6, 2000.

Florida Panthers TV/Radio

All Florida Panthers hockey games can be seen on the Fox Sports Florida television network.  ESPN also has television rights to Florida Panthers games based on the popularity of the game. Tune into WAXY 790 on your AM dial to catch each Florida Panthers hockey game on the radio.

BB&T Center

The Florida Panthers play their home games in the BB&T Center.  The BB&T Center (previously known as Broward County Civic Arena, National Car Rental Center, Office Depot Center, and BankAtlantic Center) is an indoor arena located in Sunrise, Florida. It is home to the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League. It was completed in 1998, at a cost of $185 million, almost entirely publicly financed, and features 70 suites and 2,623 club seats.

BB&T Center is currently the largest arena in Florida and second-largest in the Southeastern United States, behind Greensboro Coliseum.

During the 2011 offseason, the BB&T Center replaced the original green seats in the lower bowl with new red seats, as a part of the Panthers "We See Red" campaign.

In October 2012, Sunrise Sports and Entertainment completed installation of the Club Red seating sections encompassing the center ice seats during hockey games. It is an all-inclusive nightclub experience following the trend of other sports and entertainment venues in incorporating high-end seating sections and clubs.

The ADT Club located on the club level offers five-star food and beverage for every event, VIP club parking, executive concierge services, private business services, lounge area and much more. The Duffy’s Sky Club at the BB&T Center encompasses approximately 8,000 square feet and caters to approximately 500 guests with a Panthers themed interior design, full-service bar, outdoor patio, specialty buffet and tremendous sidelines. The Penalty Box offers fans another luxury seating and dining option inside the BB&T Center. The Legends Lounge is a restaurant located on the Lexus Suite Level and offers sit down service.

The BB&T Center is also the home for private loge box seating. These state of the art boxes include the upscale amenities of a luxury suite with the excitement of sitting in the arena bowl. Amenities include comfortable, swivel contoured chair with seating for four or eight people, countertop dining and viewing opportunities with access to the BB&T Chairman’s Club, waiter/waitress service, concierge service and more.

On May. 14, 2013, Broward County voted to fund a new scoreboard for the county-owned BB&T Center. On Oct. 11, 2013, the scoreboard made its debut for the Panthers 2013-14 home opener.
