AFI Corner

AFI (otherwise known as A Fire Inside) is an alternative rock band whose music spans the genres of hardcore punk, punk rock and alternative rock.  The members of A Fire Inside are Davey Havok, Jade Puget, Hunter Burgan and Adam Carson.  AFI’s official fan club is called the “Despair Faction.”  Despair Faction was founded in 2002.

Background

AFI was formed in Ukiah, California in 1991.  The original members of the band were high school students Davy Havok performing lead vocals, Mark Stopholese playing guitar, Vic Chalker playing bass and Adam Carson playing drums.  After a few years, Chalker was replaced by Georff Kresge who was then replaced by Hunter Burgan.  Thereafter, Mark Stopholese was replaced by Jade Puget.

AFI released its debut album, Answer That and Stay Fashionable, in 1995.  Answer That and Stay Fashionable was then re-released in 1997 on a different label.  Very Proud of Ya was released next, and AFI’s tour completed to promote this album marked the transition to new bassist Hunter Burgan.  By the time Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes was released, AFI had transitioned from their original sound to a much more aggressive hard core sound.  Black Sails in the Sunset then introduced more dark romantic influences.  After Black Sails in the Sunset, AFI recorded the All Hallows EP which included the single “Totalimmortal.”  “Totalimmortal” was eventually covered on the soundtrack to the Hollywood movie “Me, Myself and Irene” with Jim Carrey.  This song opened A Fire Inside to a wider audience base.  Another single that brought AFI more mainstream success was “The Days of the Phoenix” from the next album, The Art of Drowning.  Sing the Sorrow was then released under the DreamWorks label.  Singles from Sing the Sorrow brought AFI even more mainstream success and eventually brought AFI a nomination at the MTV Video Music Awards for the music video for “Girl’s Not Grey.”  Sing the Sorrow also includes “Rabbits are Roadkill on Route 37.”  Decemberunderground marked another change in AFI’s sound.  Decemberunderground debuted at No 1 on the Billboard charts.

AFI has had two songs featured in the Madden NFL (National Football League) video game series.
