Ducks Corner
The Anaheim Ducks are a professional hockey team in the National Hockey League (the NHL). The Anaheim Ducks play in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference with four other teams: the San Jose Sharks, the Dallas Stars, the Los Angeles Kings and the Phoenix Coyotes. Ducks tickets will be a hot item during the 2014-2015 NHL hockey schedule.
Anaheim Ducks 2014-2015 Outlook
If all goes well, the Ducks should be one of the best half-dozen teams in the league. Unfortunately, they could achieve that and still not get home ice in their own division. That’s life in the Pacific these days. If the Ducks can’t finish first, they probably need to go through both L.A. and San Jose just to get to the conference finals.
They did finish first last year, and in theory, adding Kesler should make them even better.2 The team has plenty of good young talent behind their superstar pair of Getzlaf and Corey Perry, and Heatley is an intriguing gamble. The blueline doesn’t feature a Norris-type stud, but it’s solid, and Bruce Boudreau is one of the best coaches in the league.
As with so many other teams, goaltending will be the big question; the Ducks will rely on youngsters John Gibson and Frederik Andersen. Both have been very good in limited playing time, including during last year’s playoffs, but with Hiller out of the picture, the kids are on their own now. This could be one of the best combos in the league within a few years, but Ducks fans may be holding their breath until they see it for a full season. Anaheim Ducks have high hopes for the 2009-2010 NHL season given their recent success.
History
The Anaheim Ducks franchise was founded in 1993 by the Walt Disney Company as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
The Anaheim Ducks have not retired any players’ jersey numbers. The NHL retired Wayne Gretzky’s jersey number #99 league-wide on February 6, 2000.
Anaheim Ducks TV/Radio
All Anaheim Ducks hockey games can be seen on either the Prime Ticket television network or the Fox Sports West television network in the greater Anaheim / Los Angeles area. Local Anaheim television station KDOC TV-56 will also broadcast a handful of games each NHL season. ESPN has television rights to Anaheim Ducks hockey games based on the popularity of the game. Tune into the Anaheim Ducks flagship station KLAA 830 on your AM dial to catch each Anaheim Ducks hockey game on the radio.
Honda Center
The Anaheim Ducks play their home games in the Honda Center. The Honda Center, previously known as the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim and colloquially called The Pond or The Ponda, is an indoor arena in Anaheim, California, United States. The arena is home to the National Hockey League’s Anaheim Ducks and was home of the former National Lacrosse League’s Anaheim Storm, which folded in 2005. Beginning in 2014, it will be home to the Los Angeles Kiss of the Arena Football League.
The arena opened on June 19, 1993, with a Barry Manilow concert as its first event. Since then, it has been host to a number of events, such as the 2003 and 2007 Stanley Cup Finals. On June 6, 2007, the Anaheim Ducks defeated the Ottawa Senators, 6–2, in game five of the Final at Honda Center to clinch the franchise’s first-ever Stanley Cup championship. The Ducks have never lost a Finals game played at the arena.
UFC 59, UFC 63, and UFC 76, UFC 121 have been at Honda Center and with UFC on FOX next as well. It hosted the 2005 IBF World Championships for badminton in 2005.
The arena seats up 17,174 for its primary tenant, the Ducks. It takes only five hours to convert Honda Center from a sporting arena to an 8,400-seat amphitheater. There are 84 luxury suites in the building, which has hosted 17.5 million people, as of 2003. In 2005, the arena became the first in the U.S. to have two full levels of 360-degree ribbon displays installed. Daktronics out of Brookings, South Dakota designed, manufactured and installed the 1,800 feet (550 m) of full-color LED technology. Outside the venue, the marquee was upgraded with two large video displays measuring 8 feet (2.4 m) high by 21 feet (6.4 m), and a new marquee was built with more LED video displays.
