Event Corner
The Dave Matthews Band is an American rock and roll band whose music spans the genres of rock and roll and folk music. The Dave Matthews Band is often referred to as DMB.
2012
The Dave Matthews Band took 2011 "off" for the 1st time in a long time. Instead of playing live shows throughout the entire summer, DMB opted to go with 3 local festivals spread out throughout the summer - Atlantic City, Chicago and the Gorge in Washington. While that proved to be a "humbling" and "relaxing" experience for Dave Matthews and his crew, the group is well-rested and ready to go in 2012.
The Dave Matthews Band is set to release a new album produced by Steve Lillywhite in the spring this year. Lillywhite produced the band's 1st three studio albums - "Under the Table and Dreaming"; Crash and "Before Thease Crowded Streets". The band just announced their new 2012 tour schedule. DMB will play multi-show performances in some familiar places - Jones Beach Theatre in Wantagh, New York; Alpine Valley in East Troy, Wisconsin; Cruzan Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, Florida; and The Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington. DMB fans are sure to be excited to have the band back on tour this summer. You never know when they're going to take another summer off, so don't wait to get your Dave Matthews Band concert tickets at Ticketchest.com! Just do it today.
Background
Dave Matthews was born David John Matthews in Johannesburg, South Africa on January 9, 1967. Matthews grew up in a Quaker family. In his younger years, Matthews moved with his family to New York, Cambridge, England and eventually back to South Africa. Eventually, he attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. In Charlottesville, Matthews worked as a bartender at a bar called Miller’s. Eventually, he formed the Dave Matthews Band in 1991 with other musicians in Charlottesville, Virginia.
The original members of the Dave Matthews Band were Dave Matthews, Leroi Moore, Stefan Lessard, Boyd Tinsley, Carter Beauford and Peter Friesar. Friesar eventually left the DMB and the DMB has since been joined by Rashawn Ross and Butch Taylor. The Dave Matthews Band played its first concert at a private party in Charlottesville. DMB then played its first public show at the 1991 Charlottesville Earth Day Festival. Soon, the Dave Matthews was playing weekly music gigs at Charlottesville venues. DMB released its first album, Remember Two Things in 1993. As they continued to tour and perform, the Dave Matthews Band became known for allowing fans to tape the shows for their own personal use. Ultimately, the album Live at Red Rocks 8.15.95 was released to combat, to some extent, the bootleg market for recorded DMB shows.
The Dave Matthews Band is also involved in a number of social efforts. The Bama Works Fund supports charitable programs in Charlottesville, Virginia and the surrounding area. The Dave Matthews Band and/or Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds have also played a number of charitable concerts including: Farm Aid over multiple years, America (A Tribute to Freedom) in 2001, a benefit for the New York City Public Schools in Central Park in 2003 and the Benefit for Hurricane Katrina Relief in 2005.
In 2004, the DMB was caught in a controversy in Chicago, Illinois when the driver of one of the tour buses pleaded guilty to dumping liquid human waste from the bus off of the Kinzie Street Bridge onto passengers on a boat.
Dave Matthews has also appeared with musicians other than the Dave Matthews Band and has undertaken other ventures. He was a frequent guest at Rolling Stones concerts in the 1990’s. Dave has also toured with other musicians under the name “Dave Matthews & Friends.” Matthews is a principal of ATO Records. He is one of the directors of Farm Aid. He owns a farm on which he produces organic vegetables and he maintains a vineyard. Matthews has also appeared in two movies: “Where the Red Fern Grows” and “Because of Winn-Dixie.”
Dave Matthews is married to Jennifer Ashley Harper. Together, they have twin daughters – Stella Busina and Grace Anne. Matthews frequently travels back to South Africa.
Music / Albums
The Dave Matthews Band has released a number of independent albums, studio albums and live albums. The independent releases include Remember Two Things (1993) and Recently (1994). The studio albums include: Under the Table and Dreaming (1994), Crash (1996), Before These Crowded Streets (1998), Everyday (2001), Busted Stuff (2002) and Stand Up (2005). Under the Table and Dreaming and Crash, together, brought the Dave Matthews Band true fame. Before These Crowded Streets was known by fans for its complexity and depth. Everyday was a huge hit, but contained a sound that was much different than previous albums. Busted Stuff was well received and incorporated material from the DMB’s prior recording sessions with Steve Lillywhite. The release of Stand Up in 2005 was accompanied by a summer tour which ended with 4 shows at the Red Rocks Ampitheater in Colorado. All proceeds from the final show at Red Rocks were donated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Live albums include Live at Red Rocks 8.15.95 (1997), Listener Supported (1999), Live in Chicago 12.19.98 (2001), Live at Folsom Field, Boulder, Colorado (2002), The Central Park Concert (2003), The Gorge (2004) and Weekend on the Rocks (2005). The Dave Matthews Band also has a series called the Live Trax series which are recordings of live shows that are available by order or download, but are not sold in stores. Dave Mathews has a solo album called Some Devil (2003) and Live at Luther College (1999) (with Tim Reynolds).
