Barbra Streisand is one of the most successful female artists of our time. She is an award winning pop singer, theater actress and film actress. She is also a director, a producer and a composer. Barbra Streisand’s career has spanned over 40 years. Her music appears on the Columbia Records label.
Background
Barbra Streisand was born Barbara Joan Streisand on April 24, 1942 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York. She attended Erasmus Hall High School where she sang in the school choir with Neil Diamond. While still in her teenage years, Barbra performed as a night club singer and then appeared in some off-off-Broadway productions. She eventually achieved success as a singer while performing in Greenwich Village. She soon shortened the spelling of her name Barbara to Barbra.
Barbra first achieved fame on Broadway in the 1962 production of I Can Get It for You Wholesale. She then starred in the Broadway production, Funny Girl in 1964.
At about the same time she was performing in I Can Get It for You Wholesale, Barbra she signed a recording contract with Columbia Records. Since then, almost all of her albums have been with the Columbia Records label. Over the years, Streisand has released over 50 albums. In the 1970’s, she became one of the most successful females singers and dominated the pop charts. To date, she is still a mega star in both the pop and adult contemporary genres. Streisand released her most recent album, Guilty Pleasures, with Barry Gibb in 2005. Guilty Pleasures is a follow-up album to Streisand and Gibb’s original album, Guilty, from 1980.
Streisand helped support fundraising events for former President Bill Clinton and introduced President Clinton at his inauguration in 1992. In 1994, Streisand made a global splash by touring in concert for the first time in over 25 years. A portion of the proceeds from this tour went to many charities supported by Streisand. Streisand performed in Las Vegas on New Year’s Eve 1999 giving one of the highest grossing concerts in Las Vegas history.
Streisand’s acting career has also been wildly successful. She began her acting career in the late 1960’s with a series of movies that were based on Broadway musicals. Her most recent movie was the 2004 film Meet the Fockers where Streisand starred alongside Blythe Danner, Dustin Hoffman, Ben Stiller and Robert DeNiro.
Barbra was married to Elliott Gould with whom she has one son, Jason. Streisand then married James Brolin in 1998.
The Streisand Foundation is an organization that supports a wide variety of social causes such as national organizations working on environmental issues, women’s issues, civil liberties and civil rights and AIDS research.

Movies
Barbra Streisand has also had a prolific career as a movie actress. She first appeared in the movie version of Funny Girl in 1968. Streisand won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Funny Girl, sharing the honor with Katharine Hepburn for The Lion in Winter. Over the years, Streisand has appeared in numerous other Hollywood movies such as Hello, Dolly! (1969), On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970), The Owl and the Pussycat (1970), What's Up, Doc? (1972), Up the Sandbox (1972), The Way We Were with Robert Redford (1973), For Pete’s Sake (1974), Funny Lady (1975), A Star is Born (1976), The Main Event (1979), All Night Long (1981), Yentl (1983), Nuts (1987), The Prince of Tides (1991), The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996) and Meet the Fockers (2004). Besides appearing as an actress in all of these films, Streisand produced A Star is Born, The Main Event and Nuts. She produced and directed The Prince of Tides and The Mirror Has Two Faces. She produced, directed and wrote Yentl. Barbra’s second Academy Award was for Best Original Song for the song “Evergreen” from the movie A Star is Born.
