Event Corner

Neil Diamond is an American singer and songwriter whose music has remained popular for over 30 years.  He is one of the most successful and well known American adult contemporary artists of all time.  His songs have been covered by a number of other bands including the well known tribute band, “Super Diamond.”

Background

Neil Diamond was born Neil Leslie Diamond on January 24, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York.  He attended Erasmus Hall High School and sang with Barbara Streisand in the school choir.  He briefly attended New York University (NYU) on a fencing scholarship, but soon left to pursue his music career full time.

At first, Diamond released a number of singles that failed to make the charts or gain any mileage.  He spent time writing music and penned the popular “I’m a Believer” that was recorded by the band The Monkees.  While Diamond gained success as a songwriter, he continued to work on his career as a singer and performer.  In 1966, he released his first hit called “Solitary Man.”  He performed opening acts for a number of bands, including The Who.

Diamond’s hit “Sweet Caroline” was his next break-out hit a few years later.  Today, the song “Sweet Caroline” is played in the middle of the 8th inning at every home game of the major league baseball team, the Boston Red Sox.

Through the years, Diamond has released an abundance of popular studio and live albums, many of which have a story behind the recording.  Diamond’s album Hot August Night captures Neil Diamond’s classic 1972 performance at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.  On Love at the Greek, Diamond again returned to The Greek Theatre, and at this concert, he played a duet with Henry Winkler (the Fonz).  I'm Glad You're Here With Me Tonight includes the popular song “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” was covered by Barbara Streisand and, eventually, sung as a duet with Diamond and Streisand.  The duet version of this single became a huge, and still classic, hit.  The soundtrack to the movie “The Jazz Singer” (a movie which showcased Diamond starring with Laurence Olivier and Lucie Arnaz) included the hit singles “America,” and “Love on the Rocks.”

Diamond’s old hits have resurfaced in many modern productions.  The Hollywood movie “Pulp Fiction” includes the track “Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon.”  The movie “Saving Silverman” features characters that play in a Neil Diamond cover band.

Diamond originally married Jaye Posner with whom he has two daughters, Marjorie and Elyn.  After Diamond and Posner divorced, Diamond married Marcia Murphey with whom he has two sons, Jesse and Micah.  Diamond and Murphey later divorced.
