Event Corner
The Fray is a rock and roll band that formed in 2002 in Denver, Colorado. The Fray’s music spans the genres of alternative rock, piano rock and rock and roll. The Fray has four members: Isaac Slade, Joe King, Dave Welsh and Ben Wysocki. Many fans compare the Fray’s sound to the band Coldplay.
Background
Slade and King started playing together in early 2002 when they were schoolmates. Soon they added Welsh, Wysocki and a 5th member who soon left the band. Slade performs lead vocals and piano, King plays guitar and performs vocals, Welsh play the guitar and Wysocki plays drums and other percussion. The name “The Fray” came out of a suggestion bowl at a graduation party for one of Slade’s brothers.
The Fray’s first two releases were Movement EP and then Reason EP, neither of which launched hit singles. Finally, the Fray passed “Cable Car” to a Denver radio station that was known to highlight local bands. “Cable Car” was a hit and opened the door for the Fray’s success. By 2004, The Fray was voted “Best New Band” by readers of the Denver published Westward alternative newsweekly. Epic records eventually found out about The Fray and signed them to a deal at the end of 2004. Epic records released The Fray’s debut album, How to Save a Life, in September 2005. Around this time, The Fray changed the name of the song “Cable Car” to “Over My Head (Cable Car).”
The Fray toured with Weezer and Ben Folds in 2005. By 2006, The Fray began its own tour. The Fray has also appeared on The Tonight Show and The Late Show with David Letterman.
The Fray’s music has been frequently licensed and has been featured on television shows such as “Scrubs,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “What About Brian,” “NCIS,” “One Tree Hill” and “Bones.”
