Flyers Corner

The Philadelphia Flyers are a professional hockey team in the National Hockey League (the NHL). The Philadelphia Flyers play in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference with four other teams: the New Jersey Devils, the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Flyers tickets will be a hot item during the 2014-2015 NHL hockey schedule.

Philadelphia Flyers 2014-2015 Outlook

The Flyers look like they should be a solid playoff team, especially in the Metro. After all, they made it with room to spare last year, and this year head coach Craig Berube won’t have to parachute into the job after the season has already started. Claude Giroux is coming off a year in which he was a Hart finalist, and could be even better if he can avoid the sort of lengthy cold streak that opened last season. The younger guys should be better, and they’ll have a full season of Andrew MacDonald.

History

The Philadelphia Flyers franchise was founded in Philadelphia in 1967 as part of the 1967 NHL expansion in which the league doubled its size by adding 6 additional teams to the original 6 NHL teams.  In addition to the Philadelphia Flyers, the NHL issued invitations to the California Seals (a now-defunct franchise), the Los Angeles Kings, the Minnesota North Stars (now the Dallas Stars), the Pittsburgh Penguins and the St. Louis Blues.  The Philadelphia Flyers qualified for post-season play in 3 of its first 5 seasons in the NHL, but won only 3 total games during that playoff stretch in failing to win a post-season series.  The Philadelphia Flyers finally shed the “expansion” label during the 1972-1973 NHL season, when it won post-season series for the first time in franchise history with a 4-2 victory over the Minnesota North Stars.  Although the Philadelphia Flyers would lose to the Montreal Canadiens in the Conference Semifinals, the team’s physical play earned them the name “Broad Street Bullies” as the team would become a force to reckon with for years to come.  From the 1973-1974 NHL season through the 1976-1977 NHL season, the Philadelphia Flyers won their division and recorded at least 112 points each season.  During the 1974 playoffs, the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the New York Rangers in a thrilling 7-game series, and advanced to the franchise’s first ever Stanley Cup Finals.  The Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Boston Bruins in 6 games to win the first Stanley Cup in franchise history.  During the 1975 playoffs, the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the New York Islanders in a thrilling 7-game series, and then defeated the Buffalo Sabres in 6 games to win back-to-back Stanley Cups for the first time in franchise history.  The Philadelphia Flyers made their 3rd consecutive trip to the Stanley Cup Finals during the 1976 playoffs, but their quest for a 3rd straight championship came crashing to a halt with a 4-0 sweep at the hands of the Montreal Canadiens.  From 1972 through 1989, the Philadelphia Flyers advanced to the NHL playoffs each and every year, and were one of the most successful franchises in NHL history.  During that stretch, the Philadelphia Flyers advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals 3 more times in 1980, 1985 and 1987 but the team could never win the franchise’s 3rd Stanley Cup.  From 1989 through 1994, the Philadelphia Flyers did not qualify for post-season play, but the Philadelphia Flyers started another long playoff streak (11 years) with the 1995 playoffs.  The team even advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1997 after cruising through the Eastern Conference playoffs with 4-1 series wins over each of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers.  But the Detroit Red Wings dominated the Stanley Cup Series, sweeping the Philadelphia Flyers in 4 disappointing games.  The Philadelphia Flyers franchise hit an all-time low during the 2006-2007 season when team finished with the worst record in the NHL.  The team won only 22 games and finished the season with a franchise-low 56 points.

The Philadelphia Flyers have retired the following players’ numbers: Bernie Parent’s #1 (retired on October 11, 1979); Barry Ashbee’s #4 (retired on April 3, 1975); Bill Barber’s #7 (retired on October 11, 1990); Bobby Clarke’s #16 (retired on November 15, 1984).

Wells Fargo Center

The Philadelphia Flyers play their home games at the Wells Fargo Center.  The Wells Fargo Center (Spectrum II (prior to construction), formerly the CoreStates Center, First Union Center and Wachovia Center) is a multi-purpose indoor arena located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

It is the home arena of the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League, the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association, and the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League. The Center was completed in 1996 to replace the Spectrum as the home arena of the Flyers and 76ers, on the former site of John F. Kennedy Stadium (originally Philadelphia Municipal Stadium) at a cost of $210 million, largely privately financed (though the city and state helped to pay for the local infrastructure). It is owned by Comcast Spectacor, which also owns the Flyers, and is operated by its arena-management subsidiary, Global Spectrum.

The Wells Fargo Center lies at the southwest corner of the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, which includes Lincoln Financial Field, Citizens Bank Park, and Xfinity Live!.
